Most guidance covers what an accessible shower should be. Very little covers what actually happens once someone starts knocking your bathroom apart — and that is where the expensive surprises live.

The floor survey 🔍

This single check decides whether a level entry is achievable, and it is the most commonly skipped step in the whole process. A quote given without it is a guess.

Where a level drain cannot be achieved, the standard workaround is to raise the whole bathroom floor by an inch or two so the shower can drain into the new build-up. That works well, and it moves the step from the shower entry to the bathroom doorway — which is a much better place for it, because a doorway is crossed dry, on two feet, with a frame to hold.

Permits and who does the work 👷

  • A permit is normally required where plumbing is moved, electrical is altered, or structure is changed — which covers most tub-to-shower conversions.
  • Ask the contractor to confirm for your jurisdiction and to include permit costs and inspection scheduling in the quote, not as an extra.
  • Licensed plumber for the waste and supply work.
  • Licensed electrician if lighting, extraction or heating changes.
  • Waterproofing matters more than tiling. Ask specifically what tanking system is being used and whether it is warrantied.
  • A Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist costs more and advises on positions rather than just fitting — often worth it.
  • Get three quotes against one written specification, including the threshold figure, or you are comparing different jobs.

  10. Silicone, snagging and testing. Water test the falls, load-test the bars and seat.

Two stages deserve your presence on site: step 2, when the valve position is fixed, and step 4, when the blocking goes in. Both are invisible afterward and both are expensive to correct.
