How to Install Grab Bars Near the Toilet (Safely)

Grab bars beside the toilet are one of the highest-leverage safety upgrades for any accessible bathroom. They are also one of the easiest installs to get wrong.

Step 1: Anchor into studs

Drywall alone cannot support transfer loads. Use a stud finder, mark the centers, and drive bars into solid wood. If the geometry forces you to span empty space, use rated toggle anchors (250+ lb load) — never plastic drywall plugs.

Step 2: Height matters more than length

For horizontal bars, mount the top edge 33–36 inches above the finished floor. For vertical bars used in sit-to-stand transfers, the bottom should start about 28–32 inches up.

Step 3: Test before relying on it

Pull, twist, and put your full weight on the bar before leaving. Zero wobble, zero rotation. If there is any flex, re-anchor before the user transfers.
