ADA Bathroom Dimensions: A Practical Cheat Sheet
You do not need to memorize the ADA Standards to build a more accessible bathroom — but a few core numbers matter.
Doorway
- Minimum clear opening: 32 inches (95 percent of wheelchairs fit).
- Recommended: 34–36 inches for caregivers + walkers.
- Swing direction matters — outward swings preserve interior floor space.
Turning radius
- Wheelchair: 60-inch (5-foot) clear circle, ideally beside the toilet.
- Walker: 36-inch circle is workable in small bathrooms.
Grab bar zones
- Beside toilet: vertical bar 28–32 inches above floor, horizontal at 33–36 inches.
- Tub: vertical at the entry, horizontal along the long wall, plus a control-end bar.
