The Caregiver Bathroom Setup Checklist
Setting up a bathroom for caregiver-assisted use means designing around two bodies — not one. Use this checklist.
Space
- Clear assist-side path (28+ inches) on the caregiver’s preferred side.
- Remove rugs, baskets, and obstacles from transfer zones.
Hardware
- Bilateral toilet safety rails for stand-assist transfers.
- Stud-anchored grab bars at the toilet, in the shower, and beside the tub.
- Transfer bench if there is a tub.
Workflow tools
- Gait belt within arm’s reach of the toilet.
- Handheld shower head for seated bathing.
- Bidet attachment to reduce assisted wiping.
Communication
Establish a verbal cue for transfers (“on three”) and a stop word so the user can pause anytime without explanation. Dignity-preserving language matters as much as the hardware.
