ADA Bathroom Dimensions: A Practical Cheat Sheet

May 25, 2026 · admin · May 25, 2026 updated

You do not need to memorize the ADA Standards to build a more accessible bathroom — but a few core numbers matter.

Doorway

  • Minimum clear opening: 32 inches (95 percent of wheelchairs fit).
  • Recommended: 34–36 inches for caregivers + walkers.
  • Swing direction matters — outward swings preserve interior floor space.

Turning radius

  • Wheelchair: 60-inch (5-foot) clear circle, ideally beside the toilet.
  • Walker: 36-inch circle is workable in small bathrooms.

Grab bar zones

  • Beside toilet: vertical bar 28–32 inches above floor, horizontal at 33–36 inches.
  • Tub: vertical at the entry, horizontal along the long wall, plus a control-end bar.

Our Bathroom Visualizer lets you sketch your room and see the turning radius live.
